I have known only those traditional metal playing Russian bands e.g. Aria, Korrozja Metalla so far. Lately the Condemned Cell album spins in my CD. This is doom metal band and I have to say that I will listen to it not once. Condemned Cell is two-person project hailing from Russia, their music is a conglomeration of doom metal with dark metal elements. «Shadows Of The Past» is filled with darkful, melancholic and haunted atmosphere. Despite the album is not-well produced you can listen to it with interest because it has one most important feature I mean originality.
The keyboards rules here, there are lot of keyboards here they sound variously, some time they are hiding in backgrounds and some time they are main instrument creating sorrowful and suicidal atmosphere. Guitar sound is not well at all, it is a typical buzz like coming from the standard black metal albums from early 90’s. But let me explain the guys: the technical aspect of their music is great. While they are playing such doomy passages and atmospheric acoustic parts the technical skill is in hiding, but when the solos burst out you can be surprised of its skill. There are as good as heavy metal solos! Even they are similar to such heavy metal tunes like in «Playing With The Dead» song.
There are two kinds of vocals, both are screaming vocals but one of them is a typical growl similar to Sotiris of Septic Flesh growl, and second one is a srhrieking vocal - a typical black metal scream of the ass-kicked crow, ha, ha, ha. Their music reminds me sometimes early Tiamat, but rather their slower, more doomy songs, it is similar to early Septic Flesh too. But sometimes you can hear more happy Paradise Lost tune e.g. in «Frozen Skies». Alas there is a drum machine here, Condemned Cell is another band without a live drummer. But here their music is more cold and dark without a live drummer.
There is quite good as it is a debut album. The guys coped with this material, they have recorded the album containing whole bunch of their own ideas and original tricks. This doom metal with dark metal influences means there are not boredom here. I listen to it with pleasure, «Shadows Of The Past» can be a good prognosis for the band’s future. I want doom metal fans and Russian metal scene fans to pay attention on Condemned Cell.
